Finding the Right Fit

Planning an elopement in Big Sur, California, offers breathtaking scenery and intimate settings. To capture these moments, selecting the right photographer is crucial. When looking for a Big Sur photographer—especially for an elopement or wedding—there are a few key factors to consider:

1. Experience in Big Sur

Big Sur has dramatic cliffs, secluded beaches, and dense redwood forests. A photographer familiar with the area will know the best locations, lighting conditions, and how to navigate the terrain safely. They’ll also be prepared for the region’s unpredictable weather, including fog and strong coastal winds. I have live on the Monterey Peninsula my entire life and therefore know the area VERY well. I grew up camping in Big Sur as a child, take my own kids camping there every summer - so I know it like the back of my hand! And whenever I'm not shooting, I'm in Big Sur scouting for new secret locations to take my couples!

2. Knowledge of Permits & Regulations

Certain locations in Big Sur, such as Pfeiffer Beach and Garrapata State Park, require permits for professional photography. An experienced photographer can guide you through the process, ensuring your elopement stays compliant with local rules. I am happy to facilitate this process during booking and point you in the right direction to make sure you obtain the correct permit for your big day! Here is where you want to start!

3. Adventure-Ready & Flexible

Big Sur elopements often involve hiking, beach walks, or cliffside views. Choose a photographer comfortable with outdoor settings who can adjust to unexpected weather or last-minute location changes. Having a local photographer means that we know what to do one the unexpected happens - which it ALWAYS does. Wind storm at Pfeiffer Beach? Let's go to Garrapata. Road closure due to construction? Let's turn around and go to my favorite redwood spot that's still accessible.

4. Photography Style & Editing

Every photographer has a unique approach—some focus on dramatic, cinematic shots, while others specialize in candid, documentary-style storytelling. Review portfolios to find a style that aligns with your vision for the day. If you are looking for someone that specializes in candid, storytelling, adventurous photography AND shoots film - it's me! I'm your girl!

5. Communication & Planning Assistance

Since Big Sur has limited cell service, having a photographer who provides a clear timeline, detailed directions, and alternative locations in case of closures or bad weather is essential. Some photographers also offer elopement planning services, helping with vendor recommendations, timelines, and logistics. This is a BIG ONE. I am VERY organized and I really want my clients to have all the information at their fingertips. When you book with me I send you questionnaires to get to know you better, my Location Guide, my Style Guide, my overall How to Elope Guide, my Big Sur Entertainment and Restaurant Guide, plus so much more! 6. Reviews & Client Experience

Look for reviews from past couples to gauge how a photographer works under pressure, their ability to make clients feel comfortable, and their expertise in capturing authentic moments. A client's experience is just as important as their final gallery in my opinion. You can have absolutely gorgeous wedding photos, but if in the end you hated how your wedding day felt - what's the point? I want you to have an absolute blast on your wedding day. I want you to forget the camera was even on you. I want you to feel totally prepared for your wedding day and have the best time ever. Click HERE to read love notes from my previous couples!
