A Vintage-Inspired Big Sur Maternity Session with a VW Bus Dream
There’s something so timeless and soulful about Big Sur — the winding coastal cliffs, the golden light filtering through the redwoods, the sound of the waves crashing far below. Now imagine pairing that with a glowing mama-to-be, a vintage VW bus, and all the nostalgic, 70s-inspired vibes. That’s exactly what this maternity session was all about.
Setting the Scene
We met up just before golden hour near one of my favorite hidden pull-offs along Highway 1. The weather? Total Big Sur magic — soft breeze, golden light, and just enough fog in the distance to make the whole scene feel cinematic.
The couple had rented a perfectly restored Volkswagen Bus from local company Kombi Tours, and it instantly stole the show. It was the ultimate cozy backdrop — pillows and blankets tucked inside, doors wide open, the kind of place you could picture taking a nap after a long surf day. (Yes, that license plate does say SWTPICK–the nickname for the big green bus!)
The Vibe: Relaxed, Romantic, and a Little Bit Retro
This wasn’t your typical posed maternity session — and that was exactly the point. We kept things laid-back and natural. Our mama-to-be wore a vintage top and matching skirt that felt like something from another era, and her partner kept it casual in denim and a linen button-up. They even brought their sweet 6 year old Basset Hound mix, Pancake - who was an absolute sweetheart and just wanted to be right by mama's side the entire time. The vibe was soft, earthy, and full of sweet little moments: kisses in front of Bixby Bridge, her resting her hands on her belly with a peaceful smile, the two of them amongst the wildflowers.
We took some dreamy photos by the bus, some with the iconic Bixby Bridge as our backdrop, and some at Garrapata State Beach watching the sunset.
